- Biography / History
- The Shaw family of Owensboro, Kentucky consisted of parents Emerson Shaw (1851-1926) and Elisabeth Shaw (1856-1929) and their five children: William F. Shaw (1880-1952), Ella Shaw (1883-1965), Elesebeth B. Shaw (1886-1942), Mary Shaw (1889-1943) and Marguerite Shaw (b.1893). William F. Shaw worked as an attorney. William never married nor had any children. He passed away on November 5, 1952, from cancer.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The William F. Shaw letters (dated 1904-1936; 0.15 cubic feet; 6 folders) comprise postcards, newspaper clippings, personal and professional letters sent to attorney William F. Shaw of Owensboro, Kentucky during the first half of the twentieth century. This collection includes personal letters sent to Shaw from his mother, Elisabeth Shaw, and letters from several friends and colleagues. These personal letters cover day to day life, catching up on gossip and wishes of good health and successful work. Also included are love letters sent to Shaw by a women named Claudia. Claudia wroteabout her life in between seeing William and how much she misses him. She requests he write her more and send photographs of himself. The professional letters consist of thank you notes from past clients, general information about cases and correspondence with the parties involved in specific lawsuits.
- The William F. Shaw letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
