Collection Overview

Biography / History
Construction started on Dunbar High School, one of two African-American high schools in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1921 and finished in 1923. William H. Fouse was instrumental in convincing the Lexington Education Board that another high school was needed. The school, at 545 North Upper Street, served the Lexington African-American community until 1967 when Lexington's schools were integrated through busing. Sanford Thomas Roach coached the Dunbar basketball team from 1942-1965 with a 512–142 record.
Scope and Content

The 16mm films also feature the basketball team in appearances at the Kentucky High School Athletics Association Boy's Sweet 16 tournament, which took place both at the Alumni Gymnasium on the University of Kentucky campus and at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky.
