- Garrard County, Kentucky, named for Governor James Garrard (1796-1904), was formed in 1797, with the county seat of Lancaster.
- Scope and Content
- The Garrard County records (dated 1784-1916; 2.63 cubic feet; 5 boxes) consists of official documents pertaining to the different towns in Garrard County, Kentucky. The official documents include land grantes, business licenses, land grant records, census records, tax lists, slave compensation requests following the Civil War, and poll books. The poll books make up the bulk of the collection and show the number of voters for towns in Garrard County from 1831-1892. The types of elections included local bond issues and county government positions, such as sheriff, court of appeals judge, justice of the peace, and superintendent of public instruction. Additionally, the census records from the 1870s show an African-American majority of the population in the county.

Scope and Contents
The Legal papers series includes official documents from the county court and commissioner for Garrard County. Licenses for businesses from the county commissioner, especially for tavern keepers are included in the collection. There are requests sent to the county courts for compensation for slaves who joined the Union Army during the Civil War and lists of taxes paid.

Scope and Contents
The Election papers series includes certificates granted different towns in Garrard County the right to hold elections. Primarily the series is made of poll books from the polling places in the county including Bryantsville, Lancaster, Buckeye, Brandy Springs, the Court House and the Engine House during the mid nineteenth century.

Scope and Contents
The Census series includes records from the 1870s which reveal that African Americans were the majority of the population in Garrard County. The annual census of white schools tablature shows how many students were in every grade of the segregated white school. The two forms from 1815-1816 also include rules for obtaining population statistics in white and black schools.
