- Biography / History
- The McGill family, of Washington, D.C., included John N. McGill (1867-1915), his wife Frances Maloy, and their two daughters Miriam (b. 1899) and Allen (1900-1994). By the late 1940s, Allen McGill had moved to Daytona Beach, Florida and married George Strickland. In the same timeframe, Miriam McGill married Godfrey Twachtman and moved to Independence, Missouri. Miriam and Allen's mother moved to Florida to live near Allen and George in the mid-1950s due to her infirmity.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The McGill family letters (dated 1910-1917, 1943-1957, 1977, undated; 0.60 cubic feet; 2 boxes) comprise letters and photographs that document the relationships between Allen McGill Strickland, Miriam McGill Twachtman, and Frances McGill in Florida, Missouri, and Washington, D.C. in the 1940s and 1950s. The majority of the correspondence is between Allen and her sister, Miriam. Miriam wrote to Allen frequently, discussing their mother's health, visiting friends, traveling, money matters, hosting and attending events, and updates on their daily lives. Allen also received many letters from her mother, discussing travels to Europe, her health, seeing friends, interactions on the street, and dealing with her growing infirmity. Miriam also sent a few letters to her mother, mostly discussing the weather and updates to her house. Allen received letters from extended relatives and friends, discussing dates, job opportunities, serving in the military, social visits, moving, and personal health. Additionally, there are photographs of a horse farm located in Lexington, Kentucky and a photograph album that depicts the life of the McGill family in the early twentieth century.
- The McGill family letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
