Collection Overview

Biography / History
Lillian R. Oskamp (1872-1938) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Henry (b. 1848) and Josephine (b. 1852) Oskamp. In 1896, she married Frederick W. Keam (1864-1909), an attorney, and together they had one child, Jane C. (1907-1971). No other biographical information available.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Lillian R. Oskamp-Keam letters (dated 1894-1915; 0.10 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprises letters written to Lillian Oskamp-Keam from family and friends that document her marriage and widowhood in Ohio in the early twentieth century. Lillian receives letters from her husband prior to his passing, discussing his thoughts on marriage, plans for the future, traveling for work, funny incidents happening at home, and his desire to have her return home soon. Lillian also receives letters from her mother and a friend, discussing Lillian's travels to other cities with her daughter, daily life at home, investing in the war manufacturing effort, traveling to New York and in Canada, their desires to have Lillian and her daughter visit, and discussions on dealing with loss. There are two letters in the collection written to Lillian's husband, Frederick, discussing his career change and congratulating him on the birth of his daughter.
The Lillian R. Oskamp-Keam letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
