Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The League of Women Voters was created after Congress passed the "Susan B. Anthony" amendment, which granted women the right to vote. (After ratification by the states, this became the nineteenth amendment to the U.S. Constitution). The League succeeded the National American Woman Suffrage Association and state groups such as the Kentucky Equal Rights Association. It is a nonpartisan public service group dedicated to encouraging voter registration and to informing the public about important issues. It is in the latter role that the League has sponsored debates between presidential candidates.
- Scope and Content
- This is a collection of records of the League of Women Voters of Kentucky. It includes correspondence about national conventions, especially the 1930 meeting held in Louisville; about the organization of the League in Kentucky; and about policy issues, such as the peace movement in the 1920's and 1930's. There are copies of budgets, bylaws, and reports from the national organization. Materials from local chapters of the League in Kentucky include minutes, budgets, reports, bylaws, correspondence, meeting agendas, scrapbooks, and convention programs. A broadside urges voters to use their power wisely (49M20). There is considerable unprocessed League material, including news items, a secretary's book, bank statements and other financial records, dating from 1961-1981 (#268); periodicals and miscellaneous items relating to Kentucky, dating from 1956-1983 (#633); and a partial inventory of League records, dating from 1961-1963 (#199).
