- Biography / History
- John Hunt Morgan (1870-1940) an oil businessman, was the son of Calvin Cogswell Morgan (1827-1892) and the nephew of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan (1825-1864). He lived in Lexington, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania and married Virginia Jeffrey, daughter of Rosa Vertner and Alexander Jeffrey.

- The Morgan family papers (dated 1856-1940; 3.12 cubic feet; 7 boxes) comprise correspondence, legal papers, maps, scrapbooks, and poems, which document the personal and business interests of John Hunt Morgan (1870-1940) and his family. The bulk of the papers detail lawsuits over lands claimed by the Morgan family, particularly in Menifee County, Kentucky. The correspondence contains family correspondence, John H. Morgan's business letters, letters from his boyhood friends, and letters concerning Virginia Morgan's efforts to publish her poetry. Correspondents include Calvin Cogswell Morgan, R. C. Morgan, Henrietta Hunt Morgan, James Lane Allen, John Randolph Bolling, Desha Breckinridge, General John Hunt Morgan, Robert Bridges, Claude Johnson, Rosa V.J. Rhett, Otto Arthur Rothert, Edmund Kirby Smith, Henry Watterson, and Robert Wickliffe Woolley. Additionally, the papers include Virginia Morgan's poetry and two account books used as scrapbooks.

The Correspondence series consists of letters written by and to members of the Morgan family, primarily John H. Morgan and his wife Virginia. The series is arranged into two subseries: family correspondence and John Hunt Morgan correspondence. Additional correspondents include Calvin Cogswell Morgan, R. C. Morgan, Henrietta Hunt Morgan, James Lane Allen, John Randolph Bolling, Desha Breckinridge, General John Hunt Morgan, Robert Bridges, Claude Johnson, Rosa V.J. Scope and Contents note
The Legal papers series contains witness depositions and statements; court transcripts; court filings; maps; and deeds regarding land title disputes in Menifee County, Kentucky. The series is divided three subseries: Cases, Depositions, and General. The bulk of the Case subseries concerns R.C. Morgan vs. Big Woods Lumber Company and R.C. Morgan vs. Union City Lumber Company. The Depositions subseries contains witness depositions for multiple court cases. In some instances the cases are not clearly identified and many are incomplete. The General subseries contains unidentified court records; deeds from Menifee county; maps and plats; and other case notes.
