Medieval Manuscripts Composite Book Book of Hours England France Mary reading (imagery) Composite Book of Hours, 15th and 18th centuries (MS Latin Kentucky XVI) text Identifier: MS LAT KY XVI Summary: Text One, a portion of a French Book of Hours, contains many illuminations, those associated with the Offices, and with the liturgy, as well as foliated borders on each folio. Text Two comes from a more modest Book of Hours, probably from England, has no illustrations, and has prayers in French. Text Three was likely written by an 18th century reader as a supplement to the Book of Hours. Origin: Text One: 15th century, likely France. Text Two: 15th century, likely England. Text Three: probably 18th century, France. Decoration: Text One includes a suite of illuminations typical to a Book of Hours, illustrated Kalens. Text Two is not illuminated, has rubricated initials. Provenance: Gift of Philip Sang, 1961. Short catalogue description (20th c.) on front paste down. No. 12 in ink on top left front paste down. Possible price in pencil on top left of paste down. "Aug. Carlier curb de b???" on fly leaf (v) "This Mss was presented to the very Rev. Thomas Downes, D.D., P.P. Kilmallock, Co. Limerick, Ireland". Notes: "Ledger" style format—a long, thin book block. Shift in hand and style on fol. 69. Text Two is possibly English (Anglo-Norman). See horned Gs (ex. 70r), which are typically English. Very elaborate, typically English, penwork in to the top margins of 85v. Fol. 86 has later hand's notation along the bottom margin. Possibly a name on top margin of 92v. Note on back paste down lists thirteen large, fourteen small images. Inclusion of Job on Dung Hill illustration (fol. 47v) suggests late 15th century. Sufferage of Saints has three female saints and five male, including S Claude. Script: Gothic Bastarda Support: Parchment Binding:  17th or 18th century brown leather with gold stamping. Layout: Text One: 38-39 long lines and foliated border, ruled in pink ink. Text Two: 37 long lines.
