Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Graves family emigrated from England to Virginia in 1607 and 1608, arriving on the ship "Mary and Margaret". Some of the early settlers' descendants later moved to Kentucky.
Scope and Content
This collection contains family letters, genealogical materials and other papers belonging to the Graves family and related lines. These materials were collected by Kate Lewis Clark Graves, wife of George Keene Graves who was a founder of Graves Cox and Company, a Lexington, Ky. clothing retailer. Mrs. Graves also compiled much of the genealogical data. A group of letters written in the late 1840s through the 1850s by Mrs. Graves ancestors, the Clarks of Lexington, Ky., is present. The majority of these letters concern family news but they also discuss political issues of the day.
Genealogy comprises the bulk of the collection. Among the lines traced here are the Arbuckles, Cassels, Clark and Lockharts, Graves, Graves- Goodwin, Keene, Lewis, Logan, McCoy and Rice. There are also many materials concerning patriotic societies to which Mrs. Graves belonged. In addition the collection contains records of the Needlework Guild of Lexington from 1928 to 1949. These include clippings, reports and membership lists. An allied collection of nineteenth-century family photographs is held in the Photographic Archives (PA87M42).
