PREFACE 1
I
i
The Lnyentory of Federal Archives in the States is one of the pro— 1
ducts or the work of the Survey of Federal Archives, which operated as i
a nation—wide project of the Works PrOgress Administration from January i
l, 1936 to June 39, 1937, and has been continued since that date as a a
unit of the Historical Records Survey, also operating as a nation—wide 3
project of the Works Progress Administration, and a group of state or
local projects of that Administration. .
The plan for the organizatiOn of the Inventory is as follows: Series :
I consists of reports on the administration of the Survey, acknowledg- f
ments, and general discussions of the location, condition, and centent
of federal archives in the states. Succeeding series contain the de— A
tailed information secured by workers of the Survey, in inventory form, f
a separate series number being assigned to each of the executive de- y
partments (except the Department of State) and other major units of the “
Federal Government. Within each series No. l is a general introduction 2
to the field organization and records of the governmental agency con— ,
cerned; the succeeding numbers contain the inventory proper, separate Q
i numbers being assigned to each state in alphabetical order. Thus, in 1
each series, the inventory for Alabama is No. 2, that for Arizona No. 3,
, that for Arkansas No. M. etc. i
. For each local office information regarding each series, or unit of i
2 related records, is presented in the following order: title, inclusive %
1 dates (”to date” indicating an open file at the time the informatiOn t '
5 was secured), general description of informational content, description 3
g of the system of filing or indexing (if any), a statement of frequency A
f and purpose of use, form of the record itself (bound volumes, sheets 3
'f in folders, etc.), linear footage, description of the containers, phy— .
,é sical conditiOn of the records (not stated if satisfactory), location f
g by room number or other identifying information, and finally, the num~
g ber of the Form 588A on which this information was orginally recorded ,
g by a Survey worker and frOm which it was abstracted for the Inventory. }
g This form is on file in The National Archives. When it contains sub— i
'2 stantial information on addenda sheets which has not been included in Z
é the mimeographed abstract, indication of this is giVen by use of the 5
E reference ”See addenda.“ , i
Q In Arizona the work of the Survey was directed by Dr. Howard E
E A. Hubbard of the University of Arizona, with Mrs. Meryl 3. Morgan as E
.§ his assistant, until June jg, 1937. Since that date the state project i
A has been directed by Mrs. morgan. This inventory of tha records of the
E Farm Credit Administration in Arizona was prepared in the Tucson and
f rhuenix offices of the Survey. It was edited before final typing by g
E Mr. Lewis J. Darter, Jr., of the Washington Office. f
