t I Montreal L.C. 27 July, l&h8
my Dear Sir I
You will doubtless be surprised in opening this to find it from ‘
one, whose silence for nearly two years since we met, must have created
in your mind some doubt of his being in the land of the living, particu-
larly as at that time his respiration was under the influence of stramon-
ium-—-to say that I am ashamed of my neglect is the least I can say, but
as I'm sure youhonly require a confession, to forgive, then pray accept
acknowledgement? of all I ought to offer, with a promise to be a better
boy for the future---
I left home last September---much afflicted with asthma with a
determination to take you by surprise at Louisville under the impres-
_ sion that travelling as usual would improve my health, and could I have
accomplished this pleasing task, I should no doubt have won Mrs. K’s
kind services in my behalf, & then a truce for your scolding---but fate
otherwise decreed it. I unfortunately commenced my route thro' upper
Canada instead of the south, and what with bad weather adding>to my
complaint blue devils &qI was needlessly detained ten days at Hamilton
whereas had I gone to New York where I afterwards very much ~M<"~L~Vi»I
I have no doubt but my desire of seeing you would have been attained,
the season then became advanced and the reports I there gleaned of the
difficulties to be encountered in a journey to Louisville at that late
season which I believe were exaggerated added to a little homesickness,
determined my return---
You stated in your kind favor(I blush to name the date) that Mrs. K
joined you in hoping that it would notabe long ere a meeting would take
place either in Louisville or Montreal, may we therefore trust in that
hope being realized this present summer in Montreal; I assure you it
would ha¥e·afford to Mrs. G and myself a most lively satisfaction in
e which I know the rest of the family and connexions would heartily partici-
v pate
· , we can always make room for a friend or two, doubt not my sincerity _
when I say that none would be more*“s°’* welcomed---put it my Dr. fri Z»¤
to the test, three days without fateagaejwill bring you from New York,
the rest`of the route I am not acquainted with-·-Our provinces are per- V
fectly tranquil, the country is most delightful & healthy, a finer season
we have not experienced for years and tho' last not least of course I am v_
Y more myself in health this year than I haveT§§§E*f5?'§§v§F§¥¥=$§E€5d www ‘
&uns‘l85l---Should your business not permitfto accompany your good lady
I freely offer my services for the charge and would endeavor to meet
_her at New York could I know the time she would be there---Mrs. G re-
peats with me pray do come & promises to make the time glide as boyantly
as possible. u — ’
Our Governor General Lord Durham keeps uszalive, he left this
i (having made a tour in w;c,) yesterday for Quebec and returnsuhither
in about a month--- I
I I received a few lines from your kind friend Mr. Townsend of Boston
at your instance for which I am greatly obliged---our mutual friend &
v still my neighbor Mr. Scott has been absent lately for the recovery of
i his health, in which I have the pleasure to say he has succeeded. Mrs.
