Scope and Content
The Weising family papers (dated 1905-1947, undated; 0.69 cubic feet; 2 boxes, 43 items) comprises letters, papers, and photographs that document the lives of the members of the Weising family in Pennsylvania and Germany in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The letters are primarily sent to Gustus Weising and his future wife, Elfriede Arndt, from their friends and family and many of them are written in German. Letters to Gustus discuss personal health, relationships, travel, education, hopes to have him visit, thoughts about the future, and business. Letters to Elfriede are mainly in German, from her family. Those that are in English discuss her traveling to the United States, the celebration of her marrying Gustus, and having children. Other letters in the collection are sent to distant relatives or to immigration officers. The papers include newspaper clippings, travel documents, and poetry written by Elfriede. The photographs depict life in early twentieth century Germany between the Weising and Arndt families.
The Weising family papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
