The Whitefield Stump was discovered in a Harlan, Kentucky mine in 1938 and was given to the UK Geology Department by George Whitefield, former manager of Clover Fork Coal Company, in 1960. The stump is "cast" fossil of a lycopod tree that lived about three hundred million years ago
