Students in a classroom at the Hindman Settlement School. "Hindman Settlement School - 1902 - was private. Founded in 1902. Only high school in area. Must live there because of distance. They work one hour after school and until noon on Saturday for their keep $10 a term for room and board. Teachers ride circuit from the settlement school to 1, 2, 3, room schools for kindergartens, art, music, etc. Also for mountain crafts - doll making, folk dancing, loom weaving, wood working. Not too much is known about this type of school, outside the area." This quote was originally hand written and attached to the photo
