- Biography / History
- Albert John Kimball (1865-1927) was born in Illinois, in the 1870 and 1880 census he was listed as living with his aunt and uncle. In 1895, Kimball married Clara Belle Holmes (1865-1953); together the couple had four children, Margaret Elizabeth Kimball Payne (1896-1981), Holmes Amos Kimball (1897-1984), Clara Irene Kimball Laverton (1904-1945) and Mary Alice Kimball (1900-1900). The 1910 Census states that Albert was a book-keeper and Clara worked as a stenographer.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Albert J. Kimball letters (dated 1894-1898; 0.44 cubic feet; 11 folders) comprise letters written to Clara Belle Holmes of Fairfield, Illinois from Albert John Kimball of Ellery, Illinois from 1894-1898. These letters contain many details about their growing relationship. They discuss their love for one another, longing to be together, plans for their future wedding and dreams of their life together. This collection also has a letter written to Clara from her niece Bessie Spears who lived in Caddo, Texas.
- The Albert J. Kimball letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letter, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
