Biography / History
Edwin D. Rodgers [born c. 1841] spent most of his life in Minnesota working as a blacksmith. Prior to the Civil War, he lived near Freeborn, Minnesota; as of the 1880 United States Federal Census Rodgers lived in Wells, Faribault, Minnesota.
Scope and Content
The Edwin D. Rodgers papers (dated 1851-1863; 0.3 cubic feet; 2 boxes) consist of diaries, a letter, a powder horn, and 2 photographs documenting life for Rodgers immediately prior to and during the Civil War. The diaries discuss farming, the weather, Rodgers' mustering into the army in 1862, camp life, marches in Tennessee and Kentucky, and various battles. The diaries describe chasing General Braxton Bragg's Army, the battle of Perryville, and the Battle of Murfreesboro. Rodgers' letter to his mother mentions attempts by soldiers to leave the army through self-harm. The photographs are unidentified.
