Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Gwendolyn "Gwen" Sternberg Curtis was born to the late Charles and Beulah Sternberg on December 5, 1950. For 45 years, from 1973 to 2018, she developed and maintained the University of Kentucky Libraries Map Collection. The Libraries honored her by naming the map collection after Curtis in a ceremony on September 19, 2018. Curtis died on December 16, 2018. She was married to Michael Curtis. They had one son, Kyle P. Curtis.
- Scope and Content
- The University of Kentucky Libraries. Map Collection: Gwen Curtis papers (dated 1972-2018; 2.35 cubic feet; 2 record storage cartons and 1 document box) comprise annual reports, monthly reports, and statistical reports documenting the activities of the Map Collection at the University of Kentucky Libraries from its inception in 1973 through 2016, as directed by Gwen Curtis. Also includes a "Guide to Kentucky City and County Maps" and a "Guide to the Map Collection," written or edited by Curtis. The folder of "Annual reports, 1991- ," includes an overview of Curtis' library career, written by her in 2008. The folder of "Annual reports, 1974-1990," includes a history of the Map Collection. The Map Collection is currently part of the Science and Engineering Library.
