Collection Overview

Biography / History
Artist Joe Downing (1925-2007) was born in Horse Cave, Kentucky, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He attended Western Kentucky University, the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, and the Chicago Art Institute. In 1950, Downing moved to France to paint, becoming a world-reknowned abstract artist. He lived in the village of Menerbes until his death in 2007.

Scope and Content
The Joe Downing exhibition records (dated 1957-1964, undated; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) contains correspondence, photographs, pamphlets, invitations, and a broadside relating to a showing of Downing's artwork at Kentucky State College in 1964. The collection includes photographs of Joe Downing as well as his paintings; exhibition pamphlets from Europe, Asia, and throughout the United States; and the correspondence of Field Representative, Herbert Finch with other universities, museums, and art galleries concerning the exhibition. Finally, the records include the invitations and broadside used to advertise the exhibition.
