Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- John Moylan was the son of a successful Irish merchant who immigrated to America along with many of his brothers. He established a textile and clothing business in Lexington, Kentucky in 1792. Moylan also served as a clothier to the Continental Army for numerous years, which eventually led him to close the store. After closing the store Moylan returned to Europe, where he later died in England.
- Scope and Content
- The John Moylan ledger (dated 1792-1794; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 item) consists of business transactions that took place in John Moylan's clothing and textile store in Lexington, Kentucky. Each patron had a page that lists items purchased as well as remaining balance owed. In most cases where a balance is owed the ledger indicates the date the balance is due. The writing is faded, but a few of the items still legible are hymn books, stationary, hats, blankets, and wine. Toward the back of the ledger, there are pages pertaining to a voyage to New Orleans; the items he purchased there to resell at his store in Lexington.
