Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy was organized in 1870 and chartered in 1873 as the Louisville College of Pharmacy. This was an independent institution of higher education which wasn't affiliated with the University of Louisville. The College became a division of the University of Kentucky in 1947, and later part of the UK Chandler Medical Center in 1966.
- Earl P. Slone was a professor at the Louisville College of Pharmacy when this institution transferred to the University of Kentucky. Dr. Slone helped with the transition and was named the Dean of the College of Pharmacy in 1949. He retained this position until his retirement in 1965.
- Beginning in 1966, Dean Joseph V. Swintosky led an era of expansion and program development. The college attracted nationally recognized faculty, added the doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) and of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs, pharmacy practice residencies, clinical service programs, a program for postdoctoral scholars, and the Center for Pharmaceutical Science and Technology
- In 2007, the College of Pharmacy continues to thrive and grow, maintaining its place among the Top Ten pharmacy programs in the United States.
- Scope and Content
- The College of Pharmacy papers and prints collection contains correspondence pertaining to the college honorary fraternity and the business of the college, clippings, reports, photographic prints, plans / blueprints, and teaching materials. Materials from a women's honorary fraternity named the Ring of Hygeia (1967 & 1985) is also included in this collection.
