Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- J. Frank Maish (1891-1981) and Frederick E. Maish (1898-1951) were brothers, born in Rossville, Indiana to Joseph H. Maish (1861-1923) and Mary Haslet (1866-1939). Frank married Faith Butz (1887-1957) and they had one child, Ruth Irene (1917-2000). Frank was an employee of Fairfield Manufacturing Company until his retirement, and Ruth went on to own and operate her own beauty shop after moving out from her parents. Frederick joined the Army in 1916 and was part of the 7th infantry, 3rd division during World War I. Frederick left the Army in 1926, after attaining the rank of sergeant. In 1921, Frederick married Lillian Wilken (1897-1990), in Washington. Together the couple had three children, twins Frederick Jr. (1921-1993) and Franklin (1921-1993), and Joseph (1931-2010).
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Maish family papers (1900-1957, undated; 0.29 cubic feet; 7 folders) comprises letters, papers, notebooks, and a diary that document the lives of members of the Maish family in Indiana and Washington in the first half of the twentieth century. The letters come from family and friends, discussing personal health, local weather, gossip, trips taken, attending school, and life in the military. The papers include report cards, a recipe for bread, and a lease agreement. The notebook documents Frederick's duties in the Army as the athletic NCO for his company, and the diary documents the first few weeks of Ruth's second semester of her third year of high school.
- The Maish family papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
