Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- In the early 1960s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sought to alleviate flooding by constructing a dam in the Red River Gorge area in east central Kentucky. Congress initially authorized the construction of the dam in 1962, but through the efforts of numerous conservationists, local activists, and environmental organizations such as the Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, and Save Our Red River, the construction of the dam was eventually halted through a court injunction. It is now a protected wilderness and geological area.
- Scope and Content
- The Cathy Wilson collection on Red River Gorge (dated 1960-1975; 0.5 cubic feet; 2 boxes) comprises correspondence, meeting minutes, newsletters, clippings, court filings, and reports regarding the efforts of environmental activists, led by the Sierra Club, to save the Red River Gorge in Kentucky from being dammed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s to 1970s.
