Collection Overview

Biography / History
Minister. Kavenaugh served with the sixth Kentucky Infantry Regiment of the First Kentucky or "Orphan" Brigade, which was composed of volunteers who chose to fight for the Confederacy.
Scope and Content
This reel of microfilm is a copy of letters sent by a Confederate chaplain, Hubbard Hinde Kavanaugh, to his wife Annie. Kavanaugh, a Methodist minister, did not include many battle details in the letters, but he did write about his feelings against the war. In one letter he described his ministry to five men of the unit who were to be shot for desertion, despite being absent only three hours.
