O
I THE ARTS AND CRAFTS STORE IDEA
A "BIG" STEP ON A IONG JOURNEY
By - Mrs. Rahma Jackson, Chairwoman of Association of Local
Action Groups
Mr. Cottrell and Mr. Lay have almost given my speech
as I had prepared it but I wanted to get my two bits in.
We've had to work so fast to get this store built. This
reminds me of a story of a man who instructed Lhis gardener to plant
a certain tree. The gardener asked the man why plant the tree since
it would take it a hundred years to mature. The gardener replied,
"In that case, plant the tree today1"
This is the way we felt the night of the Local Action
Group meeting when we were discussing somesteps to take for immediate
and long range project that would be worthwhile for the county.
As I am Chairwoman of the Local Action Groups in Knox County, it was l
placed on my shoulders to appoint a committee to do planning for
some worthwhile community project. I appointed Matt Bargo, yaIter_
Blanton. Dorthy Philpot, Chester Bargo, and Loretta York to this
committee. We met with Mr. Hollis West on February 26. It was through
our discussion at the meeting here that we came up with the idea to
build an Arts and Crafts Store.
We took our suggestion back to the Association of Local
Action Group at their next meeting. The members attending, as well
as members in the audience, were all enthusiased about the project.
