Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Kentucky Militia was both the formal and informal system of military force in Kentucky. Virginians settling Kentucky in the late 1700s brought with them their militia system, organized by county with a colonel for each county. The Kentucky Militia primarily defended early settlers from Indian attacks, but also served a significant role during the War of 1812. Due to the decline in Indian wars, in 1854 the Kentucky General Assembly effectively abolished the state militia by passing a law requiring them to muster only every six years. The Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard (1860-1861 and 1878-1912). In 1912, the Kentucky State Guard was reorganized into the Kentucky National Guard.

Scope and Content
The Kentucky Military Records Collection (dated 1809-1891; 0.1 cubic feet; 2 folders) comprises documents sent to the Governor of Kentucky, the Adjutant General's office, or the Secretary of State of Kentucky by various divisions of the Kentucky Militia and the Kentucky State Guard. The bulk of the records consist of postcards sent to the Adjutant General's office in Frankfort, Ky. between 1887 and 1891 requesting different forms of documentation, such as discharge papers, general orders, and blank forms. Additional items include meeting minutes for the 42nd Regiment of Kentucky Militia from 1809 until 1810, recommendations for military appointments, and Annual Returns for the 8th Division of the Kentucky Militia for 1831 and 1832.
