Collection Overview

Biography / History
William Virgil Jordan founded WLAP on September 15, 1922 when he was granted the second radio station license in Kentucky. WHAS, the first licensed station, had been formed less than two months earlier, also in Louisville, on July 18, 1922. WLAP's first permit allowed it to broadcast at 15 watts, but this was increased to 20 by 1923. Though WLAP was the second licensed station, there is some dispute as to which station holds the title of "Kentucky's First Radio Station." Before either was licensed, Jordan was broadcasting from the Big Six Auto Repair Shop in Louisville, mostly in the evenings and at his leisure. Many consider the Big Six broadcasts to be Kentucky's first radio station. As late as 1925, WHAS and WLAP were still the only licensed stations in Kentucky.
Jordan sold WLAP to the Virginia Avenue Baptist Church of Louisville in 1926 for $675. The used the slogan "We Love All People" and transmitted from the church. Their programming was limited mostly to Sunday services. During this time, WLAP increased its power to 30 watts. The station was sold in 1928 to Dinwiddie Lampton who operated it from studios in the Inter-Southern Building on South First Street. At the time, WLAP was second in the ratings to WHAS, which also enjoyed a power advantage. WLAP responded by promoting itself as the local station. As part of this effort, the station carried the Derby, local boxing, and Louisville Colonels minor league baseball.
In 1931, Lampton sold WLAP to Ralph Atlass, who moved the studios to the Speed Building. It was then purchased by George W. Norton, Jr. After a brief struggle for the supremacy of the Louisville airwaves, Norton sold WLAP to Turner Rush and Alvin Witt who announced they would move WLAP to Lexington. The studios were set up in the Walton Building on Main Street and WLAP, now at 250 watts during the day and 100 watts at night, went back on the air on March 17, 1934. It was at this time that famed personality Ted Grizzard joined the WLAP staff. He was known for many years on the Lexington airwaves for his man-on-the-street interviews. In 1934, WLAP started broadcasting UK football games and, in 1935, they added basketball. They also broadcast the Bluegrass Stakes and other Keeneland Races. For these practices, WLAP began promoting itself as the "Thoroughbred Station of the Nation."
In 1936, WLAP was sold to the Nunn Family - J. Lindsay Nunn and his son Gilmore. Nunn also owned the Lexington Herald at the time, as well as a number of other newspapers and radio stations across the southwest. Eventually they sold the newspaper, but kept WLAP and moved it to more modern studios at Walnut and Short in 1938. In 1940, the tower and transmitter were moved to Mason Headley Road. In that same year, WLAP formed the Ashland Oil-Aetna Sports Network and carried Reds games live from Crosley Field as well as continuing to cover UK football and basketball with J.B. Faulconer handling the play-by-play.
In 1950, WLAP established itself at 630 on the AM dial, and the transmitter was moved to Russell Cave Pike. They began broadcasting with 5,000 watts during the day and 1,000 at night. In 1958, the studios were moved to Upper Street. Throughout most of the fifties and sixties, WLAP featured middle of the road music during the day and rock and roll at night.
The station changed hands numerous times in the late fifties and sixties. In 1974, the studios moved to Russell Cave Pike where the transmitter already was. They were the first station in town with a generator that could broadcast when the power was out. On April 3, 1974 when tornados swept through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio, they were the only link to the outside world for some people. In 1994, the format changed to all sports with call-in shows and Reds baseball.
Much of the above information came from Francis Nash's Towers Over Kentucky: A History of Radio and Television in the Bluegrass State.
