Collection Overview

Biography / History
Bertram Phillips Pond (1901-1999) was born in Illinois to Wilber Sanford Pond (1865-1945) and Viola Arminnie Mohler (1879-1965). On June 16, 1928, he marries Norma Lois Crane (1907-1997) with whom he has three children: Marilyn Doris (1929-2010), Phillip Albert (1930-1994), and Charlotte Ann (1931-2005). Pond was a retired Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel and engineer who designed and produced air-powered motors for aircraft, along with working on the space shuttle program in the 1970s. He was also a noted scale-aircraft modeler who helped create the Academy of Model Aeronautics (in Muncie, Indiana) in1933, and helped organize several other national contests for model aeronautics. Pond authored two books, Model Aviation: an Easy-to-Understand Scientific Instruction Book on Building and Flying for Schools and Classes in 1936 and Expansion Engine Powered Model Aircraft CO2 Compressed Air Steam in 1987, and wrote articles for Popular Aviation and Popular Science Monthly.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Bertram P. Pond letters (dated 1974-1983; 0.03 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise twenty three letters that document the activities of aviation, scale model, and military enthusiasts in the United States, England, and Australia in the 1970s and 1980s. The majority of the letters are to Bertram from aviation enthusiast in Australia and England which discuss deals made for magazines, books, plans, and print advertisements for scale model hobbyists. There are three letters in the collection addressed to his eldest daughter Marilyn (Lynn) which are from family and friends detailing their international travels.
The Bertram P. Pond letters collection are of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
