Collection Overview

Biography / History
Charles William Headley (1839-1920) was the son of Marshall Headley and Margaret Farra. His father established Allandale farm in 1852 in Jessamine County, and upon his death Charles inherited the farm. Over the course of his lifetime Charles became a prominent Standardbred horse breeder and farmer. In 1880 Charles married Isabelle Blakemore Headley (1849-1904) and they had three children: Fannie Headley and Marshall Headley (twins, 1881-1881) and Oscar Farra Headley (1884-1953).
Scope and Content
The Charles William Headley diaries (dated 1861-1918; 2 cubic feet; 2 boxes) primarily consist of 17 diaries, which document the life of horse breeder Charles William Headley and the operation of his farm, Allandale, near Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The diaries discuss the weather, trips, local events, attending "the colored fair", friends and relatives, and church attendance while living in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Additionally, the diaries detail Charles's health and his work on his horse farm, Allandale. These farm activities include the planting and harvesting of crops as well as the sale, breeding, and birth of horses, cows, and pigs. The 1861-1864 diary contains several references to the Civil War. The collection also includes a Kentucky University Building Fund Certificate.
