Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- John Young (1759-1837), a Revolutionary War soldier, came to Kentucky from South Carolina and settled in Jessamine County. His son, Dr. Archibald Young (1791-1860), was a farmer and physician who practiced medicine in Jessamine County for more than half a century. He married Martha G. Young (1800-1834), and they had ten children (John, Brown, Minor, Jessamine, Archibald, Samuel, Thomas, Robert, Matthew, and Martha). Thomas R., Samuel, Matthew and Archibald Young all became physicians. Thomas R. Young (1833-1910) married Sallie Bagby Young (1848-1912) of Ashland, Kentucky. They had five children, three of whom survived beyond the deaths of their parents: Thomas R. Young, Jr.; William C. Young; and Jessamine Young. Thomas R. Young, Jr. (1878-1941) married Bess Lee Berry (1889-1976). They had two children: Betty Berry Young and Jessamine Wallace Young. Jessamine "Peggy" Young married E. C. Wooton of Huntsville, Alabama, and Betty Young married Charles Wooton.
- Scope and Content
- The Young-Wooton family and genealogy research papers (dated 1813-1990; 12 cubic feet; 22 boxes) contains family papers and correspondence, diaries, medical documents, legal papers, genealogical records and research notes, family history publications, and family photographs from the Young, Wooton, and other related families. Over half of the collection contains the genealogical research conducted by successive generations of the Young and Wooton families. Most of these records were collected by Jessamine Young and E. C. Wooton, who served as president of the Wooton and Related Families Association. The historical family papers contain medical records and both personal and professional correspondence from numerous doctors in the families, especially Dr. Thomas R. Young, Dr. Matthew Young, and their father Dr. Archibald Young. Of particular interest are the letters between Matthew Young, a Union Army surgeon, and his brother Thomas R. Young, a civilian doctor in Ashland, Kentucky, discussing medical conditions and opinions during the Civil War. Later letters discuss living conditions in the South during Reconstruction.
- The family photographs are largely centered on the Berry and Young families, with particular emphasis on Dr. William A. Berry and Dr. Thomas R. Young families. The images depict upper-middle class families in Kentucky and their home life, trips to Florida and to visit friends in Ohio, and outdoor excursions to the new Dix River Dam and other sites in and around Kentucky in the early 20th century. Bess Young attended college at the Chevy Chase College and Seminary in Washington, D.C., an early school for women, and there are light-hearted images of her and her friends away at school. All of Jessamine Young's photographs are grouped together due to being inconsistently labeled as Jessamine I or II, as well as nicknames of Jess, Jessie, and Peggy due to the name being used for at least three generations.
- As the Young and Wooton families were quite large and married into other families, there are multiple family surnames reflected in both the papers and photographs. There are items related to Berry, Bland, Chambers, Combs, Davis, Gibson, Jordan, Kelly, Ligon, Lincoln, Mitchell, Moffitt, Murphy, Noe, Perry, Poague, Rankin, Shipley, Tackett, Thompson, and Trowbridge families. Many photographs remain unidentified.
