- Biography / History
- Fordyce Ely was born January 25, 1989, in St. Croix Falls, Polk County, Wisconsin. He obtained his BS from the University of Minnesota. He served in World War I for one year during college. He earned his MS in 1921 from Iowa State College and his Ph.D. in 1936 from the University of Kentucky. Ely served on the faculty at Iowa State College, 1921-1928 (promoted to assistant professor 1922 and associate professor, 1924), and on the faculty at University of Kentucky from 1928-1948 as Professor of Dairy Husbandry in charge of the Dairy Section. From 1948-1963, he served on the faculty at the Ohio State University and Experiment Stationas Chair of Dairy Science. Ely married Dikka Hillestad in 1923, and they had one daughter, Dikka Jane Ely, who was married in 1962.

- Scope and Content
- The Fordyce Ely correspondence (dated 1941-1944, bulk 1943-1944; .35 cubic feet; 1 document box) comprise incoming letters mainly from students and former students of the Dairy Husbandry Department of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture who joined the military during WWII to Dairy Husbandry professor Fordyce Ely and department secretary Miss Nellie Lawrence, along with outgoing letters in response. Many of the incoming letters were prompted by receiving the Diary Club newsletter "Lotta Bulla" (No copies are present.) Some v-mail is included. Correspondence was originally housed in an accordion folder labeled "Soldiers Mail, 1943 to Jan and Feb 1944."
