Collection Overview

Biography / History
David Herndon (1790-1860) and his wife, Mary Moreman Herndon (1794-1867) came from Virginia in the early part of the nineteenth century and settled on farm land extending into Breckinridge and Meade Counties in Kentucky. Their son, Richard S. Herndon (1821-1886) was born in Virginia and lived on their farm near Webster (Meade County), Kentucky. Richard devoted his life to agricultural pursuits and both maintained and added to this farm acreage. The family were members of the Baptist church and Richard went on to serve as moderator. Richard Herndon married Annie Washington, a direct descendant of John Washington (brother of George Washington). Annie Washington was the daughter of Henry Washington (1792-1860), born in Virginia and Catherine (Bate) Washington (1799-1855), born in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The other children of David and Mary Herndon settled in various parts of the country.
