The first letterbook, 1868 August 29 to late 1870, is inscribed by James M. Stone in Paynes Depot, Scott County, Kentucky. The letterbook contains letters from Stone to various business associates. The main subjects of the letters discuss sending money to various associates for the purchase of crops (rye, corn, etc.), the market price of crops, and requests for associates to purchase items on his behalf.
