Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Albert Gallatin "A. G." Craig was born to Benjamin Craig and Elizabeth Morris on April 1, 1807 in Riverview, Gallatin County, Kentucky. He married Virginia Judith Brooking (April 15, 1817-June 15, 1893) on September 23, 1834, and they had eleven children. A. G. Craig served as a judge in Gallatin County, Kentucky (appointed in 1851 and 1854) and also served as a school commissioner. Along with his brothers John Anderson and Walton, he speculated in land in Arkansas and Missouri. His sons later went to live on the lang. Craig died on October 22, 1883 in Gallatin County, Kentucky.
- The Brooking family is closely tied to the Craigs. A.G. Craig married Virginia Judith Brooking, and her brother Edward Brooking married Craig's sister Elizabeth Morris Craig.
- Scope and Content
- The Craig/Brooking family papers (dated 1807-1905, bulk 1857-1869; 1.31 cubic feet; 3 boxes) consist of photocopied papers from the children, siblings, and other relations of A.G. and Virginia Craig. The bulk of the family correspondence takes place during and concerns the Civil War. In addition to correspondence, the collection includes receipts, some published accounts, and advertisements. Furthermore, the deeds found in the collection contain the signatures of the following Presidents of the United States: James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Grover Cleveland. The collection provides insight into the life of the Craig and Brooking families of Kentucky in the nineteenth century.
