Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Henry Harvey Fuson, author, poet, teacher, and lawyer, was born August 21, 1876, in Bell County, Kentucky. He received his A.B. in 1905 from Cumberland College and his B.S. in 1920 from the University of Cincinnati. Fuson worked in Kentucky schools as teacher, principal, and superintendent from 1895 to 1925. He then studied law and was admitted to practice in 1929. He was County Attorney of Harlan County from 1935 to 1936, by appointment. Fuson married Sara Ellen Watson, of Somerset, Kentucky, in 1904. They had one daughter, Ruth Maurine Fuson, born 1910. The Fuson family lived primarily in parts of eastern Kentucky that are now Bell County. Bell County was created in 1867 from parts of Harlan County and Knox County. Throughout his life, Fuson sustained interests in the history of Kentucky, in particular the southeastern region, and the literature of the state and Appalachian region. His books include: The Pinnacle and Other Kentucky Mountain Poems (Louisville, Kentucky: J.P. Morton, 1921); Ballads of the Kentucky Highlands (London, Kentucky: The Mitre Press, 1931); History of the Fuson Family, Vol. 1-2 (London, Kentucky: Mitre Press, 1932, 1938); and History of Bell County, Kentucky (New York: Hobson Book Press, 1947). Fuson was also an editor of Kentucky Folk Lore and Poetry Magazine and a member of the Kentucky State Historical Society.
- More biographical details can be found in Fuson's History of Bell County, Volumes 1 and 2. Transcription is available on the Bell County Public Library's website.
- Scope and Content
- The Henry Harvey Fuson papers (dated 1902-1964; 19 cubic feet; 19 boxes) comprise bound manuscripts that document the life and writings of Henry Harvey Fuson, as well as the history of the Fuson family of Bell County, Kentucky. The collection is organized by format into 4 series.
- The Journals series contains volumes of Fuson's short writings on current events, daily life, political events and opinions, and poetry.
- The Letters series contains letters to and from members of the Fuson family. Some volumes also contain newspaper clippings and photographs of members of the Fuson family. A note from Fuson in the first volume states that the letters are not organized by date or subject, rather in the order they came to him.
- The Manuscripts series contains bound volumes of Fuson's poetry and short stories, as well as autobiographical writings. Volumes include both drafts of published writings as well as unpublished works.
- The Scrapbooks series contains primarily newspaper clippings that document the history of the Fuson family, Bell County, and southeastern Kentucky. The Fuson family lived primarily in parts of eastern Kentucky that are now Bell County. Bell County was created in 1867 from parts of Harlan County and Knox County.
