Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Lexington and Newtown Turnpike Company constructed a turnpike from Lexington to Newtown in Scott County, Kentucky.
Scope and Content
The Lexington and Newtown Turnpike Company records comprise a stock book, treasurer's book, and a ledger, documenting the company's investors, budgets and expenses, and the board of managers' meetings. The stock book consists of an inventory of the company’s stockholders and a record of the certificates they owned. The treasurer's book contains financial transactions for the turnpike company. The book also includes a printed copy of the "1848 Act for the benefit of the Maysville and Mount Sterling Turnpike Road laid in June 1870" and a handwritten contract. The ledger book records minutes from the meetings of the turnpike company board of managers as well as itemized budgets and expenditures for specific projects. The records were kept by the presidents of the company, such as David Castleman, E. S. Offrett, and A. J Gorham as well as company secretary D. S. Coleman and chairman E. N. Offrett.
