Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Josephine Neal (1848-1924) and James Morton (1833-1920) grew up in the Barren County region of south central Kentucky. The two married in the summer of 1867 after nearly a year of courtship. James was a Presbyterian minister like Josephine's father, Reverend William Neal Sr. Josephine's brother William Neal was killed in 1864 fighting for the Confederate Army. Josephine and James moved fairly regularly for James's ministry. They spent their last few years near Dallas, Texas, and they are buried in a Dallas cemetery.

The collection also includes the mid-1850s journal of Josephine Neal's husband, James Hanna Morton as he struggled to decide upon a career in the Ministry and scores of his hand-written sermons from the late 19th century. Additionally, the collection contains other religious writings from both Josephine and James. The correspondence consists of letters written between Josephine and James during times apart during their courtship and marriage. The collection also includes correspondence between members of the Neal family.
