- Biography / History
- Mildred Fuller was born, 1899, in Pennsylvania to Millard C. and Charlotte Page Fuller. Her father was a carpenter and worked for factories. As an adult, Mildred lived with her uncle Henry in Chatauqua County, New York and worked as a telephone operator. She died in 1993.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Mildred Fuller letters (dated 1915-1947; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) comprise letters to Mildred Fuller that document worklife, health, and pastimes of her family and friends primarily in the Pennsyslvania and New York region. Mildred received letters from her father and his sisters which discuss factory work, health, and family disputes after her father's death. She also received letters from Arja G. Thomas of Scranton, Pennsylvania in which he writes about his work, young adult Baptist Church organizations, and his enrollment in the US Army as the country joins the First World War. Most of the letters are from Frederick Arthur Turnquist, a traveling salesman for Jamestown Furniture Company, from 1929-1947. He writes about his travels and compliments Mildred often, but it is unclear if their relationship is romantic.
- The Mildred Fuller letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
