Collection Overview

Biography / History
Marine Corps Air Depot (MCAD) Miramar was designated in 1943 as a solution to the lack of space for housing and training troops at Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) Kearny in San Diego, California and operated between 1943 and 1946. Considered the gateway to the South Pacific, their mission was to supply and organize Marine aviation forces prior to overseas deployment. The depot housed, fed, trained, entertained, and transported men who were waiting for debarkation and transferred men from the surrounding Air Stations to the South Pacific Combat Air Transport. The depot also received new recruits and assigned them to various training schools as well as serving as the distribution point for those assigned to airfields in the San Diego region. After the end of World War II, the depot was a demobilization facility for men and equipment. By mid-1946, the depot was decommissioned and merged with NAAS Kearny, becoming Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar, which was later transferred to MCAS El Toro in 1947.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
