- Biography / History
- Thomas Douglas Parrish was born in 1927 in Richmond, Kentucky where he attended the Eastern Kentucky University's Model Laboratory School. He served in the United States' Army from 1946-1947 and then attended the University of Chicago. During the 1950s Parrish worked as an editor in chief for two publishing houses in Chicago. In 1964 he returned to Kentucky and took a position as the Program Director for the Council on the Southern Mountains (CSM). While working for CSM he became editor of their newspaper, Mountain Life and Work which led him to contribute to foundation and philanthropy literature as well as a position as the co-editor of News Letter, the monthly publication by the Berea College Appalachian Center. By the late 1970s, Parrish primarily focused on editing and writing history and reference books. He married Nancy Coleman Wolsk, professor of art history at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. In addition to saving his manuscripts and research papers, Parrish was an avid chamber music fan and kept programs and tickets from concerts he attended. He died on January 8, 2018. Works authored and edited by Thomas Parrish include:
- Encyclopedia of World War II (Simon & Schuster New York, NY, 1978) The Ultra Americans: The U.S. Role in Breaking the Nazi Codes (Stein & Day (New York, NY, 1986)
- Roosevelt and Marshall: Partners in Politics and War, (Morrow New York, NY, 1989)

You may come across language in UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center collections and online resources that you find harmful or offensive. SCRC collects materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. These materials document the time period when they were created and the view of their creator. As a result, some may demonstrate racist and offensive views that do not reflect the values of UK Libraries.
