Collection Overview

Biography / History
Thomas Douglas Parrish was born in 1927 in Richmond, Kentucky where he attended the Eastern Kentucky University's Model Laboratory School. He served in the United States' Army from 1946-1947 and then attended the University of Chicago. During the 1950s Parrish worked as an editor in chief for two publishing houses in Chicago. In 1964 he returned to Kentucky and took a position as the Program Director for the Council on the Southern Mountains (CSM). While working for CSM he became editor of their newspaper, Mountain Life and Work which led him to contribute to foundation and philanthropy literature as well as a position as the co-editor of News Letter, the monthly publication by the Berea College Appalachian Center. By the late 1970s, Parrish primarily focused on editing and writing history and reference books. He married Nancy Coleman Wolsk, professor of art history at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. In addition to saving his manuscripts and research papers, Parrish was an avid chamber music fan and kept programs and tickets from concerts he attended. He died on January 8, 2018. Works authored and edited by Thomas Parrish include:
Encyclopedia of World War II (Simon & Schuster New York, NY, 1978) The Ultra Americans: The U.S. Role in Breaking the Nazi Codes (Stein & Day (New York, NY, 1986)

Scope and Content
The Thomas Parrish papers (1914-2015, undated; 18.4 cubic feet; 27 boxes; 3.47 GB, 34 digital files) consist of the author's personal and professional digital files, correspondence, interview recordings, organizational records, photographs, research and subject files as well as drafts, manuscripts, and documents related to Parrish's published and unpublished works. The correspondence includes letters between Parrish and publishers, researchers, contemporary authors, friends, and family throughout his life. The letters to his parents illustrate Parrish's time in the United States Army (1946-1947) and as a student at the University of Chicago (1948-1949). Photographs are separated into two sub-series: military and political reproductions and personal. The reproductions were printed by archives and history institutions like the United Nations Archive and the Nixon Presidential Library for inclusion in Parrish's research and reference books. The Council of the Southern Mountains records consists of reports, staff memos and administrative letters created by the community development organization during Parrish's tenure as program director, 1964-1970. The subject files series includes biographical, research, and ephemeral documents and notes collected by Parrish. The files include a variety of topics like Kentucky and Appalachian community programs, Second World War research notes, speeches, and event programs. The largest portion of the Thomas Parrish papers includes drafts, manuscripts, correspondence, and promotion materials for notable books and unpublished works edited or authored by Parrish.

Audio, digital and graphic materials, 1928-2010, undated

Scope and Contents

The Audio, digital and graphic materials (1928-2010, undated) series comprises non-paper records created or collected by Thomas Parrish. The 3 ½ floppy disks contain manuscripts and scanned photographs for various writing projects. Four audio cassette tapes include interviews with Parrish, fellow historian Al Smith and one other unidentified person. The largest portion of the series comprises photographic reproductions obtained from organizations like the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and the National Archives and Records Administration. The images depict politicians, military aircraft or watercraft, war scenes and were presumably considered for inclusion in many of Parrish's publications. These photographs were minimally processed as they are available at other institutions. The series also includes photographs and negatives of Parrish, his life and friends.
