Biography / History
Cyrus Freeman (1840-1925) was born in Maine to Cyrus Freeman and Elizabeth G. Mosher. In the mid-1860s, Freeman married Celeste Smith and together the couple had one child, Arthur Clyde Freeman (1865-1949). Cyrus served in the Union Army during the Civil War, as a corporal of Company H of the Ohio 15th Infantry Regiment. After the war, he returned home and worked as an overseer in a cotton mill in New Hampshire.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Cyrus Freeman letters (dated 1871-1897, undated; 0.042 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprise letters sent to Freeman from family and friends the document his personal and professional life in New Hampshire in the late nineteenth century. Letters come from members of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), coworkers and colleagues, and family members. The letters from the GAR discuss issues of transitioning from a previous leader to a new one and membership dues. Letters from colleagues discuss declining an invitation to eat at the expense of Freeman's cotton mill and how work is coming along. The letters from Cyrus's family discuss the death of his uncle, his son's education, his wife's well-being, marriage and baby announcements, daily life, and thanks from his son for sending him a sleigh.
The Cyrus Freeman letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
