The minutes of the called meeting of April 22, 1974 were accepted as circulated. 1
Chairman Smith made the following remarks to the Senate: l

There are very few things to report to you from the Chairman's Office
and from the Senate Council. At the last meeting one of the items under A,
discussion, which the Chair indicated would be referred to the Senate Council, fin
was the question of the study of the function of the area committees. The W”
Council discussed this matter at one of its meetings since that time and
reached the conclusion that it may well be necessary to restudy the way in i
which area committees function. However, it was our thinking that at the 1
present time all of the recommendations in the Krislov Report, which this
body has approved, have been transmitted to the President. He has not yet
had an opportunity to respond to them. Since some of those recommendations
imply or specifically charge changes in the function of the area committees, ~
it was not clear to us exactly what the function of the area committees will 1
or will not be until after there has been some decision, and perhaps action,
on the Krislov recommendations. Therefore, it was the decision of the Council
not to take any action at this time concerning a study of the area committees,
but rather to wait and see what the end result of the Krislov recommendations l
is and then at that time, attempt to determine precisely what it is we want ‘
to study. So there was no action on that consideration. We do have it listed ‘é

as an item to be returned to next fall.

Minutes of the University Senate, May 6, 1974 - cont 3792 3

The Council has been engaged in several other activities in the
two weeks since we met. The Council had one meeting with Vice President
Wall, and Assistant Vice President Wethington from the Community Colleges
and discussed a number of matters of interest there, notably certificates,
associate degrees, and some general problems of articulation between the
University System and the Community College System.

In another meeting we met with Dean Gallaher and Dean Drennon of the
College of Arts and Sciences to sort of brainstorm some long—term impli—
cations of some of the materials implicit in the Arts and Sciences pro—
posed renovations, or changes. There were no action items or anything d"*
else. These were simply matters of discussion and information.

The Council took one official action of some note, in addition to
a number of minor ones such as rules, waivers, and circulating things that
we usually do. We received a request from Vice President Cochran to
provide him with advice concerning the desirability, or lack thereof, of
establishing a new unit to be called the Center for Professional Develop—
ment in the College of Education. This is a new unit which replaces the
Bureau of School Services. This is not, strictly speaking, an academic
unit in the sense of a department or college, but it does have some con— 1
siderable import for academic matters at the institution. As a result, "
Vice President Cochran felt it would be worthwhile to have some input
from the Senate. The Council referred this to the Senate standing Committee
on Organization and Structure. That Committee held a meeting ,met with
Dean Denemark, and recommended that the proposed Center for Developmental ‘ }
Change ought to be submitted to the Board of Trustees for approval. That ‘
Report was received by the Senate Council, who discussed the matter also, , fl
and subsequently recommended to Vice President Cochran that we concurred 1‘:
in the approval of the establishment of a Center for Professional Develop- ’
ment, as reported by the Senate standing committee and we recommended to
Vice President Cochran that he go on with our approval in submitting this
through the appropriate channels, gt cetera.

Finally, I would like to digress briefly to introduce to you Mr.
David Mucci, President—elect of the Student Body, who will be serving on
the Board of Trustees and in this body for the coming year.

By action of the Senate in delegating its authority to the Senate Council,

the candidates for degrees at the May, 1974 Commencement, as circulated to the g
faculty under date of April 15, 1974, were approved by the Council for transmittal '
to the Board of Trustees, and are on file in the Registrar's Office.
