- James Mason Thomas was born in 1833 at Fort Rock, Kentucky and married Anne Elizabeth Rogers in 1953. Thomas raised the 1st Kentucky Mounted Rifle Battalion for the Confederate States of America in 1861 and was commissioned as the battalion captain. Many of Captain Thomas' relatives also joined the war on the Confederate side, including his brother-in-law, Captain William Skillman Rogers (1819-1895) and his nephews, Captain James Thomas Rogers (1841-?), Private Hiram C. Rogers (1845-?), and Private Hugh Rogers (1848-1891). All of the Rogers served with Lexington General John Hunt Morgan in some capacity.
- After Thomas mustered out of the war in 1862, he traveled to Windsor, Canada and engaged in the lumber business. After the end of the Civil War, he returned to Kentucky and started successful lumber businesses in both Kentucky and Tennessee. Thomas amassed a large fortune and used it to build churches and schools throughout Eastern Kentucky. Thomas and his wife Anne had two sons, William Rogers Thomas and Robert Lee Thomas, both of whom followed him into the lumber business. Thomas served as a Kentucky State Senator in the 1890's for the area encompassing Bourbon, Clark, and Montgomery counties. James M. Thomas died in 1905.
- Scope and Content
- The James M. Thomas Photographic Collection, 1859-1895 consists of twenty-eight albumen cartes de visite, some identified as family of James M. Thomas. The bulk of the identified photographs are his wife's cousins, members of the William Skillman Rogers family of Bourbon County, Kentucky. The photographs were originally organized in an album, from which they were removed due to preservation issues. The album has been kept intact.
