Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Student Center, located near the corner of the Avenue of Champions (Euclid Avenue) and South Limestone Street, houses the offices of the Student Government Association and other student organizations, the UK bookstore, various dining services, two theaters, the Rasdall Art Gallery, student radio station WRFL, and other services, including a UK Credit Union branch. The Office of Student Affairs and its administrative head, the Vice President of Student Affairs, are responsible for the planning, development, and guidance of all non-academic student activities on the University’s campus. The Dean of Students and Student Center Director’s Offices are located hierarchically within the larger office of Student Affairs.
- The original Student Center building, fronting on South Limestone, was completed as the Student Union in 1937 and was expanded in 1962. During this time, Mackie Rasdall served as director of the Student Union from 1944-1966. Once the expansion was completed in 1966, the name was changed to the Student Center. At this time, Frank H. Harris became director and served for 24 years, although not consecutively. As the university grew, an addition to the Student Center was proposed and completed in 1987 and is connected to the older building by a pedestrian bridge.
- Scope and Content
- The University of Kentucky Student Center records consist of files from the Director of the University of Kentucky Student Union (later Student Center) and materials from the office of the assistant dean of students. These materials include files for specific programs and events, correspondence, and general office functions and policies. There are a few photographic prints and numerous publications published outside of UK.
