Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Russell Rice was the sports information director for the University of Kentucky Athletics Department (1968-1987). He also served as assistant athletic director (1987-1989), was media coordinator for several NCAA basketball regional tournaments and the 1985 NCAA Final Four in Lexington. In addition, he was a columnist and managing editor for the Cats' Pause, a publication devoted to UK sports information and has written several books about UK sports since 1975 including Wildcats: Kentucky Football (1975); Adolph Rupp: Kentucky's Basketball Baron (1994); and the University of Kentucky Basketball Vault (2008).
- After graduating from UK in 1951, Rice began his career as a city editor for the Mountain Eagle (Whitesburg, Kentucky) and Hazard Herald (Hazard, Kentucky) newspapers. He became a reporter in 1953 and sports editor in 1962 for the Lexington Leader.

- The Russell Rice collection on University of Kentucky sports (10.5 cubic feet, 30 boxes; dated 1876-1994 and undated, bulk 1920-1973) is comprised of sports-related materials gathered by Russell Rice, which largely focus on University of Kentucky basketball and football but also include materials related to other campus sports. There is extensive coverage of Adolph Rupp, specifically in the areas of correspondence and photographic materials, as well as correspondence related to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts (1968-1991). There are also speech notes by Rupp and Forest "Aggie" Sale. The collection includes correspondence, notes, photographic prints, slides, negatives, newspaper clippings, Photostats, audio reels, films, and VHS videocassettes. A series of miscellaneous items contains statistics sheets and general sports information.
