Carma hopes to put wealth of energy to SGA’s benefit

By Jennifer Smith

(aim/1141' I .1111!”

Iom ( arota sits patiently lost in thought. Slowly
his legs propped up on the chair in front of liitii
begin to twitch. 1\ext, the twitching movements
become intense bouncing. His entire body moves
until the couch he is sittin r on moves, too.

He sporadically bites his lower lip with his two
front teeth while tapping a completely different beat
out on his knee.

And all ofthis happens in a matter oftwo seconds.

He smiles when asked about his nervous habits.

“I have ADD —— you know — attention deficit dis~
order," (Iarota says.

However, he is quick to tell the benefits ofit.

“ADD is an advantage," he says. “The hyperactiv--
ity is good for me. I have a lot of energy, so much
that I do not know what to do with it."

The physics junior says being president of the
Student Government Association will give him
something to do with the energy. He sees S(i.'\ as a
problem waiting to be solved.

Although he is not familiar with SGA, he is no
stranger to leadership roles.

He has worked at every osition at McDonald's,
where he has been employet for three years.

I

“III they ga1e out the award. I would have easily
tnade ‘Best I)ri1e— thru (my l"'I.1er, " ( .arota said.

He won the award for .\lost I'Iiiipowered, howev—
er. .'\nd he takes it very seriously. He said the honor
was given to him partly because he saw a problem in
his branch and took it all the way to a vice president.

“I got what I wanted," he said. “I don't ever quit,
and I always get what I want."

(Iarota is not always so serious, though. He has
quite a sense of humor about himself.

“I won employee of the month several times," he
said. “Any idiot can get that award ~ and I am cer~
tainly any idiot."

He has been involved in politics once before. He
ran for Vl‘c president of his senior class in high
school and won. He ran then for many of the same
reasons he is running now: to solve problems.
Thou h he hates SGA politics, he‘ll deal with it.

“0 )11ouslv 11 lot of good can come of (politics),”
he said. “ButI I think it is evil. I think it can be evil.
It s people slinking around Lutting deals with people
who do not believe what they do."

(Iarota, the self»proclaimed underdog of the race.
said he is always ready to surprise and shock people.

He said he is known for doing strange impressions
and mimicking loud animals.

“I like to be loud," said (Iarota, who yelled his

oaning remarks to a somewhat stunned Lrowda
last week .s (1P1\(I debate.

(Iarot'a has not always been the loud one. He said
he skipped first grade 11ml tried to keep a low profile.

“I didn‘t talk to anyone, and I had very few
friends," he said with an even smile.

”is turnaround came years later ..-.
learned he could argue well with people.

“I'm '11 strong arguer, but it's not like I 11111 Ricki
Lake material or anything like that A I‘ve ius't always
been good at it."

()vercl 1min his shyness was not the only obstacle
(Iarota has bin to deal w.ith He also is .1 di .ibetiL.

“I was motivated to move beyond being diabetic
he said. “I have beat diabetes. II can eat whateer I
want, whene1er I want. My diabetes is all in the
mind. I have kicked its ass."

And he does not intend on those battles being his
last.

“Iinning the election and reforming .S(lA are the
next battles he sees. Some, he said, argue that him
bein I an outsider will be one ofthe biggest obstacles.

he fact that no one has heard ofme is an advair
