- Biography / History
- Albert F. Lepper (1892-1968) was born in Adams, Indiana to Henry F. Lepper (1866-1935) and Mary Kanning (1869-1920). He served in the army during World War I. In 1923, he married Martha Judt (1901-1947) and together they had one child, Ruth Jane (1931-1981). After serving in the military, Lepper worked as a carpenter and farmer.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Albert F. Lepper letters (dated 1918-1919, 1937; 0.27 cubic feet; 6 folders) comprises letters sent to Albert Lepper from friends and family that document life in Indiana and the military during World War I. The letters from family members discuss life on the farm, harvesting crops, helping neighbors, visits from soldiers on furloughs, personal health, deaths in the community, receiving letters from relatives serving in the military, and hopes that he will be able to return soon. Letters from friends discuss spending time at the YMCA, working on family and friend's farms, local gossip, and news about theirs and other's military service. Letters from his girlfriend discuss farming, raising animals for slaughter, attending school, spats with friends and family, joining a choir, and her desire for him to return home soon. Additionally, there are three letters from Albert's brother while he is serving overseas, discussing his voyage across the Atlantic, life in France, attempts to see Albert, and gossip.
- The Albert F. Lepper letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
