Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Robert Hodges (1928-1986) was born in Memphis, Tennessee to George Roberts Hodges (1899-1957) and Martha Jane Gorman (1905-1964). Between 1945 and 1946, Hodges served in the US Navy. In 1948, he married Dorothy Jeanne Baber (1928-2015), however the couple divorced in 1973.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Robert Hodges letters (dated 1945-1946, 1967, undated; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder, 3 items) comprise letters and photographs that document the life and service of Robert Hodges in the military during World War II. Robert writes to his parents, discussing how much he misses them, his regrets in joining the military, life on board a ship, his boot camp experience, making friends in the military, daily duties at camp, traveling across the country to deploy, sailing to Japan, his homesickness, thanks at receiving packages from his parents, hearing from friends at home, rumors on the end of the war, thoughts on extended service, his hopes to come home soon, and how he promises to become a better son once home. There are three photos included in the collection, depicting unidentified persons spending time together.
- The Robert Hodges letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
