- Biography / History
- Charles S. Herron (1835-1925) was born in New Cumberland, Ohio to William Herron (1789-1848) and Mary Power (1800-1875). He attended Geneva College. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving as a drummer for a majority of the war. He participated in the battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and other important battles. In 1866, Herron married Laura Wilson (1851-1912) and together the couple had two children, Mary Etta (1868-1868) and Charlia (1873-1931). Herron graduated from the Eclectic Medical Institute at Cincinnati in 1874, later practicing medicine in Washington D.C. and Florida before returning to Ohio in 1901.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content

Herron letters (dated 1895-1921; 0.06 cubic feet; 2 folders) comprise letters to Dr. Charles Herron in Ohio from old friends in Wisconsin, Florida, and Washington D.C. in the early twentieth century. Herron receives multiple letters from Jennett Hartley, an old friend of his who writes about her health, her old feelings for him, the death of her daughter, her marriage, and thanks for gifts he sent her. In the other letters from friends they discuss the weather, Herron's medical practice, moving, interactions with mutual friends, and updates on their families and personal health.
- The Charles S. Herron letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
