- Biography / History
- The 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry was raised by U.S. Navy Lieutenant William Nelson in the early summer of 1861. Nelson chose Captain Speed S. Fry of Danville, Kentucky to lead the unit as a Colonel. The initial regiment was formed from elements of the Kentucky Home Guard (Kentucky Militia) and volunteers with no military training from all over the state of Kentucky. Initially called the 2nd Kentucky Regiment, it was formally renamed the 4th Kentucky Infantry by the Kentucky State Legislature. The regiment gathered at Camp Dick Robinson, in Garrard County, Kentucky and began training in August 1861. Shortly after Camp Dick Robinson was opened, it was reinforced by the 1st and 2nd East Tennessee Infantry, who had fled north through Confederate lines to Union territory.
- The 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry participated in the Battle of Fishing Creek in Mill Springs, Kentucky, in January of 1862. Colonel Speed S. Fry fired the shot that killed Confederate General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer (1812-1862). The 4th Kentucky was stationed in Lexington, Kentucky, Louisville, Kentucky, Gallatin, Tennessee, Nashville, Tennessee, and performed extensive operations in Georgia. The regiment fought in the Battle of Perryville, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Siege of Chattanooga, and participated in the various maneuvers designed to capture C.S.A. Brigadier-General John Hunt Morgan on his many raids into Kentucky.

- The Thompson Civil War Cartes-de-visite Photographic Collection (dated circa 1860-1870; 0.25 cubic feet; 1 box) consists of Civil War era albumen cartes-de-visites photographs collected by Lexington historian E.I. "Buddy" Thompson (1920-1996). Many of the photographs are only partially identified, but the majority of the identified photographs are linked to the 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, a Union regiment.
